As I look for new ways to explore with the twins, I’ve been researching sensory play. This past week, I decided a great way to play and save money at the same way was creating our very own finger paint.
Making Homemade Finger Paint
Ingredients
- 1 cup flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 cup water
- food coloring
Mix salt, flour, and water thoroughly.
To make a batch of more than one color, I used a muffin tin to divide the mixture and then add in food coloring.
One of the twins quickly realized Mommy was up to something so it was time to have him jump in and help with mixing 😉
When the colors were mixed thoroughly, we put them in small containers from the dollar store. Such a quick and simple process for the family and even a two year old can help.

What a great project. I really like the idea of using the muffin tin and getting the kids to help make the paint (not just paint with it). I also really like that this uses ingredients that most people have in their pantry already. I hope you will post some of their artwork!
Love the idea of making our own finger paint. My tiny person has some food coloring allergies but we can easily use various fruits and veggies to get the same result. Love the idea of using the tn and having the kids help!
Finger painting is so much fun. It is exciting to watch your children and see what they will create, and let their imaginiaion build from there. I really like that you use ingredients that are safe for children.
Great tips!
We add a teeny tiny bit of dish soap in our paint to help make it washable.
Love using muffin tins.
Never thought about using that!
This is such a neat project! I love that you will know exactly what is in their finger paint.

I know what we will be doing today. My kids are older, but they still love to play with finger paint.
Now this is a project I definitely want to do with my toddler! She’d have a blast!
