Here are a couple of little words that almost never fail to strike fear into the mind of just about any adult: moving day. Moving into a new house and making a fresh start is one of the very best things that you can do. You get to turn somewhere new into a home and explore all of the exciting new places around it. However, before you can do that you’ve actually got to get through moving day, something that can leave even the most level headed person pulling their hair out. Luckily, that’s not the way that it has to be. There are things that you can do to make the entire process just a little bit easier. With that in mind, here are some ways that you can stop moving day from sending you over the edge.
Make a plan
The worst thing that you could possibly do is to assume that you’re just going to be able to wing it on moving day. There is going to be so much to think about when moving day actually arrives that you’re simply not going to be able to remember it all. That’s why creating a plan well in advance is one of the most important things that you can do. Being able to go down a list and check things off as you do them will allow you not only to stay focused, but it will also make sure that you don’t end up forgetting something important that would otherwise get lost in the shuffle.
Label everything
You might think that once you’ve got everything packed away in boxes, that’s the hard work over, right? Wrong! After all, when you’re in the new house, and you’re surrounded by boxes, you’ve got to start thinking about doing it all again in reverse. If your boxes aren’t clearly labelled, then you’re going to have no idea where to start or what boxes belong in what room. You could end up having to carry boxes up and down the stairs all over again because they’ve ended up in the wrong rooms. Knowing what’s in every box and where it belongs is going to make it that much easier to settle in and actually start living in your new home.
Don’t DIY!
Moving house can be a pretty expensive endeavour. Because of this, a lot of people are tempted to save money by trying to do the move all by themselves. DO NOT DO THIS! The reality is that every penny that you might spend on moving companies is going to 100% worth it. Not only are these professionals who are better equipped to carry and transport your items than you, but it allows you to focus on other things like getting everything properly packed away and cleaned in the old house and doing the opposite in the new.
Of course, it’s important to remember that these aren’t necessarily going to take all of the stress out of moving. The truth is that moving is always going to be a difficult and stressful experience for a lot of people. But if you follow these pieces of advice, at the very least you can avoid the worst of the stress and make the process as easy as it’s ever going to be.
