Stand Together, Wear Orange: Celebrating Unity Day

National Bullying Prevention Center Unity Day

October 22nd is more than just another Wednesday—it’s Unity Day, a powerful moment for us to come together and send a clear, unified message of support, kindness, and inclusion in our communities, schools, and workplaces. Our middle school sent out a note in our weekly newsletter reminding students to join in by wearing the most orange they can. As a family that has witnessed bullying, we make a point to stand up and help others who might need that extra hand showing they’re not alone!

Unity Day, sponsored by the National Bullying Prevention Center (NBPC), is an annual event where people across the nation choose to wear and share orange to visibly show that they are united against bullying and committed to creating a world that is safe for everyone.

Unity Day October 22nd Wear and Share Orange

Why Orange?

Orange is a bright, warm, and inviting color—and it is the designated color of Unity Day. By wearing it, we create a sea of solidarity. It’s a simple action with a huge impact, showing anyone who might feel isolated or targeted that they are not alone. It represents hope, acceptance, and a collective stand against all forms of bullying.

The Power of Unity

Bullying thrives in silence. It makes people feel powerless and invisible. Unity Day reminds us that we have the power to change this. When we stand together, we:

  • Elevate the Conversation: We bring the issue of bullying out into the open and make it a priority for discussion.
  • Empower Witnesses: We show that intervening, reporting, and speaking up are not just options—they are essential acts of kindness.
  • Create a Culture of Kindness: We shift the focus from what divides us to the core values that unite us: respect, empathy, and compassion.

What Can You Do on Unity Day?

Showing your support doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few ways you can participate and make a difference:

  1. Wear Orange: Whether it’s an orange shirt, a ribbon, a scarf, or even just a pair of bright socks—wear it proudly on October 22nd! With Halloween around the corner, break out that orange hair spray or face paint!
  2. Speak Up: Commit to being an upstander, not a bystander. If you see someone being treated unkindly, safely intervene, offer support, or report the incident to an authority figure.
  3. Spread the Word: Share the meaning of Unity Day on social media. Use the hashtags #UnityDay #WearOrange or #UnityEveryDay to encourage others to join the movement.
  4. Practice Intentional Kindness: Go out of your way to be inclusive. Sit with someone new, offer a genuine compliment, or simply ask someone how their day is going. These small acts build bridges. Never forget that the little things count.

Let’s Make Every Day Unity Day

Unity Day is a launchpad. The message of kindness and inclusion shouldn’t just be limited to one day in October. Let’s carry the spirit of the day forward. Let’s commit to making every day a safe and welcoming one where differences are celebrated, and everyone is treated with dignity.

On October 22nd, join us and Wear Orange to make a visible promise: We are united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. We stand together against bullying.
