Mary Poppins LIVE at the Civic Center!

As the weather here continues to get colder, I find myself looking for activities to keep both the girls and myself entertained. I’m always excited to get the girls involved in new activities as I don’t want them to be the kids with a remote attached to their hand.

When I learned of the chance to see the Broadway Musical Mary Poppins at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines, I was excited but unsure of what to expect. I had never actually been to the Civic Center on any occasion that I remembered. Kelsie has fallen in love with music of all sorts so I was pumped to bring her along to check out her very first Broadway musical experience-right here in Central Iowa.

The musical of Mary Poppins first opened in 2004 in London and then followed to New York in 2006. The National Tour made it’s stop in Des Moines beginning on November 26th and will be at the Civic Center until December 12, 2010.

From the moment the curtain opened, the audience quickly became engaged in the show. The detail of each character and scene easily lit up the faces of all as we learned all about The Banks Family and Mary Poppins. Throughout the show, Kelsie’s eyes were full of excitement and awe-the true delight of a child’s imagination in work. “Mommy, Mary Poppins is FLYING!”

Caroline Sheen, joined the National Tour as none other than the mischievous yet “practically perfect” Mary Poppins. Full of sass and a one of a kind energy put in to her role, you will quickly fall in love with the nanny who takes care of it all. You’ll laugh at Mrs. Brill’s antics and get straight-faced with the seriousness of Mr. Banks.

Each cast member filled the stage with energetic performance put in to each and every song and dance move. I couldn’t help but tap my feet and even Kelsie knew the right times to clap. Each scene flowed smoothly together and our group agreed, the show was absolutely amazing (or as Mary Poppins herself would say, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious).

I highly recommend checking out Mary Poppins at the Civic Center while you have the chance. No matter what your age, you will fall in love with the magic that is Mary Poppins.
