There’s no scientific way to explain it other than you have a feeling in your gut. Sure, your stomach is by no means a peer-reviewed source, but you can’t help feel what you feel. For some reason, the bedroom feels “off.” And, it isn’t as if it doesn’t belong to you and your partner. It has been yours forever yet the unease has only just reared its ugly head. Now that you’ve noticed it, there is no way to erase it from your memory. It’s like the arrow in the FedEx logo.

Don’t worry because you aren’t going crazy. Often, homeowners grow tired of their surroundings and need an injection to get things up and running again. Usually, it involves a lick of paint and a touch of retail therapy and voila. However, it’s not a good idea to fix the problem if you don’t know why it exists in the first place. No Focal Point

It’s worth pointing out that plenty of homes exist without one and there are not essential. On the flip side, a focal point is an excellent way to add balance to a bedroom, especially one that is cluttered and messy. Let’s face it – most boudoirs are on the untidy side because there is a lot to include. As well as the bed and the closets, there are drawers, bedside tables, lamps and electronics. And, that is without going into the accessories such as books, musical instruments and clothes. In short, there is plenty to include and not enough space to afford everything a home. Thankfully, a focal point takes away the focus and places it squarely at its feet. Think of colourful bed sheets as an example. The vivid shades instantly grab your attention and help hide the room’s flaws.

No Fun

A bedroom should be cosy and comfortable first and foremost. As soon as it becomes uncomfortable, it negates the whole point. However, what tends to happen is that homeowners end up designing a room that is restful and boring at the same time. Granted, it will help you get to sleep, but you won’t feel as if you can do anything else in the room. Of course, that is a nod to extracurricular activities such as reading and watching TV (ahem). Sanitised bedrooms lack any form of excitement and that makes the room unappealing. The key is to mix fun and relaxation without taking away from the main aim. What mustn’t happen is that the need to have a good time overrides the ability to chill. You may not realise it, but the majority of bedrooms are culprits and it’s because they contain electronics. Watching TV before bed or surfing the internet feels like it induces tiredness, yet it has the opposite effect. As soon as you fall to sleep, the waves from the devices mess with your body and cause you to wake up. If this happens two or three times a night, there’s a good chance you’ll feel fatigued in the morning. Everyone knows how this can impact the entire day, nay, the whole week. Sorry, but the devices have to go if you want a positive night’s kip. The TV can stay but make sure it is not on standby and is switched off completely. Regarding your phone, you may want to leave it downstairs and use an alarm clock instead. Otherwise, don’t put it underneath your pillow as it’s too close.

No Youth

One reason you can’t explain why you don’t like the room any longer is that you have fallen out of love. As things age, this tends to happen. Unlike a relationship, however, it is possible to inject the bedroom with a new shine. All it takes is a gloss of paint and area should instantly feel better. Try using a shade which you wouldn’t normally or that is something you haven’t used before. Another quality trick is to add more light to the room. Now that spring is here and summer is on the way, the daylight hours are longer. Drawing the curtains or installing blinds are great ways to flood the bedroom with UV rays. Not only will it seem bigger and airier, but the UV will boost your mood too. Of course, never underestimate the effects of buying new fittings and furnishings. Because it’s new, it will give the whole layout a lift and make you see it in a new fashion.

No Love

Take a look around – what do you see? As we already know, bedrooms are full of stuff so there is a lot of clutter. Unfortunately, lots of it is of no consequence. Okay, it helps to flesh out the style which in turns makes it aesthetically pleasing. Still, for the most part, there isn’t a connection between you and the room. Yep, it’s a bombshell when you first understand this to be true. Don’t fret, though, because it’s easy to remedy. All you have to do is introduce features that remind you of something special and make your smile. For instance, it may be a picture of you and a loved one which brings back awesome memories. Or, it may be a small knick-knack that you picked up while travelling all those years ago. Whatever you choose, make sure it is something you love and can’t replace. In the future, be on the lookout for things that have cool stories. And, for the love of God, don’t throw everything in the bin!
