It is a scary fact that every two minutes, a person is sexually assaulted here in the United States. Knowing this, it’s important for everyone to take personal safety serious and do whatever you need to make yourself protected from any potential threat for violence. Now that I am a Mom, I not only need to protect myself but my children as well.
Here are some must-know tips to help keep you and your family safe.
- ALWAYS LOCK YOUR VEHICLE. No matter if you will only be gone a few minutes or your car might be sitting overnight in the dark, locking your vehicle is a must. You are deterring criminals from entering your vehicle for theft but also the chance of someone hiding in your vehicle waiting for you to enter.
- LOOK BEFORE ENTERING. As you prepare to get in your car, make it a habit of looking inside the vehicle and doing a full scan. If someone is inside, do not stick around. Keep walking and call police immediately.
- PARK IN WELL LIT AREAS. Having your vehicle in an area that’s well lit by a parking lot light is an instant deterrent from those waiting to strike
- BUDDY SYSTEM. If you are out late at night when it is dark, do not go alone if you can. Make plans with a friend or family member. Walk with co-workers to your vehicle. If you are uncomfortable walking to your vehicle, ask for a store employee, campus security or so forth to escort you to your car.
- LOCK YOUR HOME. To me this is a common sense thing but many ignore it. I ALWAYS lock my house, even when I’m inside. It does not matter where you live, crime can and will happen anywhere. So even if you’re just running up the street to take your child to school, LOCK THE DOOR!
- DON’T BE AFRAID OF PERSONAL SAFETY ITEMS. Since I began carrying Pepper Spray on my key ring, I’ve gotten many comments from individuals everywhere of how smart the idea is. When it’s only myself and the twins out running errands, it’s easy to get distracted making sure they are doing what they need to do. Having Pepper Spray on my body at all times when out in public serves as a way to stop potential threat chances and if for some reason I have to, I am ready to use it to protect myself and/or my children.
Recently I had the chance to learn about some of the new products and they provide much more when it comes to finding a safety option that is right for you.
I love that the products give you “water practice” so if you are anxious about the idea of using pepper spray, you can use an included “target” with the product or if you’re lucky enough, my boyfriend didn’t care if I practiced using the WATER on him. With the new shapes as well as a strobe light that you can point directly at a potential attacker, the look alone can help prevent an attack.

I am learning krav maga and will have my black belt in less than a year. I think I can take care of myself just fine.
You know you are a mom when I hear krav maga and instantly think of the cupcakes getting destroyed in Despicable Me 2 😉 That’s awesome you are so close to a black belt! How long has that taken you to get where you are at? (I don’t know how the titles? work)
Great tips. The whole idea of mace freaks me out a little.
It can be intimidating but I love that they have practice things now so you can feel more at ease with the idea of using it.
I use to be a home parent educator and my husband was so concerned about me going to strangers homes, he actually bought me some mace. I never had an incident that I needed but it did provide me with a level of safety.
Great tips. I used to follow those like a tee when I lived in the city. Now that we live in the country and the closest neighbor is miles away, I tend to relax more when I”m home vs when we’re out in town. But I always make sure to take a quick look around no matter where I am to get an idea of the surroundings.
Wow, that is great that there is a water practice one that comes with the purchase! I’m definitely going to find this for me and my daughter! I’ve always been nervous about carrying it b/c I never really knew how to use it. Thanks so much for this post.
My biggest tip is to stay in well lit areas at all times. Shadows are the best friends of people up to no good!
Thanks for sharing these tips! I live in an apartment building and although it’s a lovely part of my city with minimal crime, We do have some sketchy neighbors so I always make sure to take that extra step to make sure my home and family are safe.
These are all great tips and all of them are important. It’s scary that we have to be so careful these days!
My husband bout me mace, thankfully I have never had to use it. Good to have though!
Thanks to scary movies, I always look in my car before I get in. Haha! These are some great safety tips!
I do so many of these things! It is important to stay safe!
my husband would like this spray for his runs as he got bit by a dog and could have used that.
These are some great tips. Sometimes I think I am too comfortable though because I don’t always implement the buddy system.
Sadly, we love in an increasingly violent world and taking safety precautions is a must. Great reminder tips.
I always lock my car!
I need to buy some more for my mom. SHe is older and travels a lot so I like to make sure she is protected.
Thank you for the ideas. I’m always interested in new non lethal ways to stay safe. The one thing I hate is that my car doors unlock the minute I turn the car off. I always lock them again right away until I’m ready to get out.
