The Many Forms of Domestic Abuse

When people initially think of domestic abuse, it’s often associated with a scenario that could arise between a husband and wife. Yet domestic abuse comes in many forms. As such, it could be possible that you’re not aware of the wide spectrum of domestic abuse, or that you may have found yourself in such as situation in the past. Whilst it’s an unfortunate and terrible situation to be in, it always helps to know your options and ways out.

Defining Domestic

Whilst most people understand ‘abuse’, it’s not so easy to determine what ‘domestic’ refers to. More than just a married couple, domestic abuse refers to various forms of abuse between intimate relationships. This includes marriage, but also relates to family relations, such as brother and sister, or even parent and child. In any situation where one person is being abused by another in a close situation, domestic abuse may come into question, so seeking legal support and help is always advisable.

There are different forms of abuse, too. Whilst violence is something that quickly comes to mind, abuse comes in many forms. Emotional abuse is another common instance of domestic abuse. Of course, it’s not that easy to define. Again, this is another reason why you may want to seek help; if in a difficult situation, don’t instantly assume that it doesn’t come under ‘domestic abuse’.

Seeking Help

In these tough times, finding help is often rather difficult. Whilst you can turn to others, such as family and friends, you should always seek professional help and assistance. This can often be enacted more quickly than people may assume – for example, seeking court action within the same day to get the process moving as quickly as possible. This ensures that action is taken to address your situation, allowing for a quick and efficient resolution.

Outside this, or something the right legal assistance will help put you in touch with, you can seek other companies and charities that aim to help people in such a situation. Domestic abuse, as the name implies, often occurs at home, so it’s a very sensitive situation. As such, these charities can help provide support and means around any difficulties you might be facing, accommodation being one key example.

Even when in doubt, seeking help resolves any issues of doubt or confusion, helping to guide you in the right direction. Domestic abuse is never a situation anyone hopes to find themselves in, but it is reassuring to know that there is a network of organisations and individuals that can support you should you become a victim of domestic abuse.
