Living in the Midwest my entire life, I’ve seen quite a bit of severe weather and what mother nature is capable of. When it comes to severe weather (as we have some rolling in right now), I know I have lots of individuals that panic knowing I live in an apartment.
If you live in an apartment, it is always important to get to the lowest level possible. Find an area as close to the middle of the building as possible, away from windows.
Cover yourself with blankets, pillows, or mattresses. An idea that was always told to me was hide in a middle closet or bathtub.
Essentials in the event of severe weather include
- First Aid Kit
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Portable Radio
- Cell phone
- Credit Cards/Cash
- Bottled Water
- Spare Keys, personal ID
- Packaged Food that does not require refrigeration or cooking
- Medications
- Baby Supplies, diapers, formula, etc.
A great idea is to keep everything in a box in an area every member of your family knows and is ready to grab in the event of an emergency.
Always remember to stay safe and avoid dangerous areas. Do not enter flooded areas and any standing water of any sort. Do not attempt to cross downed power lines.

LOVE this post. I have been meaning to put together little boxes of essentials for “just in case” because you NEVER know!
Thanks for the tips. We should all have emergency kits ready.
