While the holidays can be a little overwhelming for many people, it presents an opportunity to get 2021 started on a positive note. Making a few smaller changes at home sets the stage for the coming year.

Here are 5 home changes that are worth doing.

  1. Replace All the Filters

The filters around the house are something that often gets overlooked. Failing to change them can lead to everything from drinking water that doesn’t taste quite right to appliances becoming clogged up or furnaces performing less well over time.

Finding a reliable source of high-quality filters isn’t easy though. Not every type will stand up to regular use, so it pays to stick to reputable brands sourced from websites like the Discount Filters Store

  1. Ship the Junk Out!

If you’re like most people, your home gets filled up with junk through the year and tends to look like a mess when December rolls around. Then it gets ‘strategically’ shoved into cupboards so that the in-laws won’t see it around the holidays.

As the New Year is now upon us, it’s time to retrieve these items. Then sift through them to decide what’s required and which items can be cleared out. A good rule of thumb here is if you haven’t used or needed the item in more than a couple of years, it’s probably time to sell it, recycle it, or give it away to someone else.

  1. Clean Up the Backyard

The backyard may still have the remnants of Autumnal leaves having fallen from nearby trees and twigs or branches that are now littering your backyard.

It’s time to give the backyard a good clean-up by taking a rake to the patio, spraying some water around to clear out the small crevices, and generally giving the place a good refresh before spring.

Try these quick ideas:

  • Trim the shrubs back to give them room to grow.
  • Weed the soil, so plants can develop too.
  • Eliminate the snow. Avoid letting snow mold develop.
  • Add some fertilizer to the lawn to stop crabgrass and encourage pre-spring growth.
  1. Switch to Eco-Products

Whilst it may have been too hectic last year to make the switch to eco-friendly products, there’s never been a better time to do so.

Look at the consumables like washing powder, household cleaning solutions, and other products where there are better options available. Also, ensure all packaging is biodegradable, so it won’t fill up landfills and never breakdown naturally over time.

  1. Make the Home Brighter

Especially in the darker winter months, it’s especially important to bring more light into the home to avoid it becoming gloomy.

This might involve drawing back the curtains or lifting the window blinds earlier in the day. A pastel-colored coat of paint on a dull wall might do the trick. Also, using brighter light bulbs works too.

Small home changes are great to do early. This way they can be enjoyed all year, rather than never getting around to them and failing to see the benefits.
